How to participate in The Gift of Reading

  1. Buy a brand new children’s book (0–12 years old) at many collection sites.

Choose entertaining books: stories, novels, comic books, board books

  2. Ask a bookstore employee, a librarian or the person responsible for the collection for a donation kit

  3. Write a short message of encouragement for a child on the dedication bookmark

Don't forget he’ll be receiving his book in May and not at Christmastime.

  4. Complete the postcard if you would like to hear from the child who is given your book.

If you like, to increase your chance of receiving a reply, put a stamp on the postcard, or place 59¢ in the bag.*

  5. Put everything in the bag and place it in the Gift of Reading box.

Only one book per bag, please.

Make a cash donation

Help us keep The Gift of Reading going! Cash donations help support the logistical aspects of the program, including distribution of the books to the children. Donate on line or at one of the participating collection sites.

Organize a book or fundraising drive

Anytime in the year, you can organize a drive at your workplace or among your friends and family in aid of the The Gift of Reading. The drive can take different forms, whether it's to collect new children's books or raise money: office party, gift exchange, golf tournament, etc.

All books collected in a given region go to children from that region.

*Since priority is given to assigning funds for distributing books to children, mailing costs are not covered by the Literacy Foundation, a non-profit organization. Moreover, the Foundation has no control over whether postcards are sent by the children, so it cannot guarantee that all donors will receive news from the child concerned.
