Do what they do!

A huge thank-you to all who contributed in an original way to The Gift
of Reading
!

Since the start of the Gift of Reading program, organizations from various sectors
—municipal and provincial government, private and community—and individuals have shown their interest in and commitment to the cause by organizing book collections and fundraising activities. Over the years, this "collection initiatives" component has grown in scope, through the generosity of loyal organizers who hold collections year after year, as well as the participation of ever greater numbers of new partners.

The 13th edition has just begun and already many partners, individuals and organizations have started to organize their own activities for the drive.

Thanks to their dedication, we succeed in distributing more books every year to disadvantaged children throughout Québec.

Take your inspiration from the original ideas presented below to organize your own collection!

Quebec's French teachers support The Gift of Reading

At their annual conference held October 28 and 29, 2010, in Saint-Hyacinthe, the members of the Quebec association of French teachers (Association québécoise des professeurs de français, or AQPF) threw their support behind The Gift of Reading. In addition to the 64 books collected during the conference, which will be distributed to as many children from the region in May 2011, positive links were formed between the Foundation and the AQPF. And this first collaboration will surely not be the last!

Special thanks for their invaluable support go to Lizanne Lafontaine, Christian Dumais and Geneviève Messier.

... and so do elementary school teachers!

The Quebec association of elementary school teachers (Association québécoise des enseignantes et enseignants du primaire, or AQEP), which has been a partner of The Gift of Reading for many years, wanted to make the program the cause of their annual conference, held November 3 to 5, 2010, in Saint-Hyacinthe.

Many teachers came to visit the Foundation at our booth. Let us hope these meetings will help make this 12th edition one of the most productive ever!

Together, we can do it: a productive partnership!

From March 24 to 26, 2010, the 35th annual conference of Quebec’s learning disability association (Association québécoise des troubles d’apprentissage, or AQETA) was held in Montreal. In order to give tangible expression to its theme, “Together, we can do it,” the AQETA invited participants to bring a brand new children’s book to contribute to the Gift of Reading program. Close to 2,000 people who care about the success of students with learning disabilities took part in this conference: parents, teachers and other professionals from the worlds of health care and education.

To thank the donors, reading had pride of place at the anniversary cocktail event organized by the AQETA on March 25. Accompanied by the performance of Valérie Côté, balancing artist and acrobat, Marie Turgeon, actress and Gift of Reading spokesperson, charmed participants by reading them a story.

As a result of this productive partnership, 162 new books will be given out to children from underprivileged backgrounds in May 2011. Our thanks to the organizers of this event, in particular Lise Bibaud, director general, Jean Alexandre, director of fundraising, and Sylvie C. Cartier, conference chairperson!

A golf tournament on behalf of The Gift of Reading

The Foundation was selected as beneficiary by the organizing committee of the 12th annual golf tournament organized by public service sector employees in Estrie. Some 100 players gathered in Coaticook on June 4, 2010, for the fundraising tournament on behalf of The Gift of Reading. The golfers raised the generous sum of $1,200 that was used to purchase 113 books from a local bookstore, which then supported the cause by donating an additional 259 books to The Gift of Reading.

Our warmest thanks go to the Biblairie GGC in Sherbrooke for their generous contribution, and to the organizing committee of the Tournoi de golf de la Fonction publique de l’Estrie for their initiative. Special thanks also go out to Ms. Dany Langlois and Mr. Jacques Bernard of the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale in Estrie for their helpful participation and steadfast support of The Gift of Reading campaign.
